Things We Should Not Obsess Over in 2018: Six Pack Abs

To wrap up our little chat about a bunch of stuff we don’t need to obsess over this year, let’s talk about six packs.  OK, this is going to be a bit of a rant, but I just need to get this off my chest… What in the world is up with all these fitness gurus and “experts” posting selfies on social media in their underwear in their bathroom mirror??? Let’s just table my admittedly judgmental observation that this practice is incredibly narcissistic. I’ll try to give these folks the benefit of doubt. I’m sure most of them are actually […]

Things We Should Not Obsess Over in 2018: “Tight” Hamstrings

If I had a dollar for every time somebody told me about how tight their hamstrings are…  Based on how often I hear that lament, I would guesstimate that 90%+ of the world’s population believe themselves to have “tight” hamstrings. OK, 90% may be an exaggeration, but still, it seems that the vast majority of us perceive that we have hamstrings that are tighter than they should be, myself included. But, doesn’t that fact beg the question… if so many of us share this perception, perhaps what we’re experiencing is in fact the norm and people who have flexible hamstrings […]

Things We Should Not Obsess Over in 2018: Cardio vs Strength Training

I started a conversation about a handful of things that many of us tend to obsess over but probably shouldn’t. Here’s #3 I got things started by saying that our weight is a subject that commands too much of our attention. Then I went on to expound on “good carbs” versus “bad carbs”. I’m sure both topics sparked some debate. I know that not everybody is going to agree with me. These are just my ideas and opinions. Take them for what they are worth. If nothing else, hopefully they’ll give you something to chew on, even if you don’t […]

Things We Should Not Obsess Over in 2018: “Good Carbs vs Bad Carbs”

Hey there! We’re continuing our discussion about things we should NOT obsess over in this coming year… #2 on my list is “Good Carbs vs Bad Carbs”. Or more generally, any food that is often labeled “good” vs “bad”.  I’m not really sure where this notion of nutritional righteousness came from. How did we ever start characterizing food as either “good” or “bad”?  And who gets to decide which foods reside where on this continuum of dietary good vs evil? At best, it seems silly. Anyway, let’s take a look at a couple of foods that are typically labeled as […]

Runaway train, runaway brain…

There I was sitting in first class on the Amtrak Acela train one Friday evening, heading home after another brutal week in New York City filled with endless sales meetings and entertaining customers till midnight every night. I rode that train a lot, hence my presence in the first class car. Upgrades are the only good thing about business travel. The cool thing about sitting up there was they served free drinks. I used to look forward to this moment every week. Basically, I had a three hour trip in which to get caught up on a heaping pile of […]

Things We Should Not Obsess Over in 2018: Our Weight

Hi Friends, I’ve been reflecting a bit of late on how particular ideas seem to command so much of our attention that we soon begin to obsess about them. This is particularly true in the health and fitness industry. Speak with just about anybody on the topics of fitness and weight loss and it’s likely that you’ll soon pick up on whatever their latest obsession might be. With all the noise that surrounds these subjects it’s not surprising how confused we all might feel. I mean, we all KNOW that fat is bad for us, right??? But, wait… what’s all […]
